Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global challenge, and effective solutions require innovative tools to monitor, analyse, and understand resistance patterns. At Resistomap, we’ve developed the Water Biosecurity Platform, a groundbreaking biosecurity intelligence platform to address this critical need, leveraging advanced technology like Takara Bio’s SmartChip system.

Why the Resistomap Platform exists

Traditional approaches to AMR monitoring often focus on short-term, project-based studies. However, combating AMR demands routine surveillance to track trends over time, identify resistance hotspots, and provide actionable insights for interventions. The Resistomap Platform bridges this gap by transforming raw environmental samples into meaningful data and insights, helping users make informed decisions.

What the Resistomap Platform offers

The Resistomap Platform combines cutting-edge laboratory services with advanced data analytics, providing a comprehensive end-to-end solution for AMR monitoring.

Key features and services:

  • Laboratory Services
    • Support with sampling design, including automated water samplers.
    • Sample processing: eDNA extraction and SmartChip qPCR measurement of 96 predefined targeted genes using Takara Bio’s printed chips containing the One Health panel, with customisation options to select specific target genes.
  • Digital Insights
    • Quantitative data from the lab is transformed into visualisations, indexes, and insights on the platform.
    • Metrics include:
      • Antibiotic Resistance Gene Index (ARGI): A metric for tracking AMR gene abundance.
      • Comparative Health Risk Score: Evaluates AMR exposure risks in water samples.
      • Gene Reduction Percentage: Measures the effectiveness of treatment processes.
  • User-Friendly Interface
    • Accessible via web browser with secure, authorised user access.
    • Views include an Overview (trends and geographic distribution), Site View (site-specific details), and Research View (gene-level analysis).

Use cases: How the Resistomap Platform makes a difference

  1. Process Performance Monitoring: Evaluate and optimise water treatment processes for reducing AMR pollution.
  2. Pollution Tracking: Identify and monitor AMR hotspots in urban and industrial wastewater.
  3. Public Health Insights: Complement patient data with population-level AMR trends for early warning and policy development.

The importance of the Resistomap Platform

The Resistomap Platform empowers users across sectors—water treatment facilities, public health agencies, and environmental regulators to gain actionable insights into AMR trends. By integrating Takara Bio’s SmartChip technology, the platform ensures standardised, high-quality data, making it easier to track resistance genes and compare results across regions.
